- catalog abstract "This survey has attempted to seek systematically the views of those directly affected and regulated by the Federal Election Campaign Act, the candidates who ran for the Senate and the House of Representatives. It was conducted by Decision Making Information of Santa Ana, California, and Hart Research Commission between January 14 and February 26, 1976. Altogether, 850 respondents (candidates, campaign managers, and other campaign representatives) were interviewed by mail or in person. Of these, 78% were interviewed by mail and 22% were interviewed in person. These 850 respondents represented an accurate cross-section chosen by random interval selection methods of the 2,150 candidates who filed reports with the Federal Election Commission and appeared as candidates on the ballot in either primary or general elections for the United States Senate or House of Representatives in 1976. Approximately 190 variables focus on seven major topics: actual characteristics of the campaigns and the candidates covered by the survey, the experiences of the 1976 election, finances in 1976, impact of the FECA on campaign organization, the role played by the FEC as an information source for, and regulator of, campaigns, which items dealt with by the Act were favored or opposed by candidates and campaign managers who participated in the 1976 election, and the respondent's overall feelings toward what should be done in the future.".
