- catalog abstract "This survey about the British general election of February 1974 was conducted with a panel of respondents who had previously been interviewed twice, in 1969 and after the general election of 1970. The survey was sponsored by the British Election Study at the University of Essex, England. The research was begun at Nuffield College, Oxford, in 1963 by David Butler and Donald Stokes. The first study by Butler and Stokes was designed to add to the small amount of information about British voting behavior that existed using a panel design. There were three waves of interviewing for the first study: in 1963, after the 1964 General Election, and after the 1966 General Election. (See ICPSR 7232, ICPSR 7233, ICPSR 7234: Political Change in Britain.) A second study was then begun with a similar design. The first interviews with a sample of electors in 80 constituencies were completed in 1969, after the June 1970 General Election a second wave of interviews was conducted with the same sample. The sample for the 1974 survey included the names and addresses of those who were interviewed in 1970, of whom about half had also been interviewed in 1969. This dataset is comprised of persons interviewed in either 1969 or 1970. If a respondent was not reinterviewed in 1974, his/her record was padded with missing data. The first 18 cards for each respondent are taken directly from ICPSR 7004, Political Change in Britain, 1969-1970, and are only documented by the codebook for that study. For a full description of the variables therein included, see ICPSR 7004. The February 1974 panel sample has 4 cards per case. Respondents answered questions relating to the mass media, to political parties, and to their attitudes toward a range of social issues relating to domestic and foreign affairs, with emphasis on the economy and the Common Market. Standard background variables are included. These data were provided to the Consortium by the Social Science Research Council Survey Archive, University of Essex, England. The data and accompanying documentation are disseminated, under an agreement with the SSRC, exactly as they were received, without modification by ICPSR. This agreement also provides that ICPSR will disseminate the data only for use within ordering institutions, and that users wishing multiple copies of the documentation must obtain them from SSRC.".
