- catalog abstract "The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a household survey sample conducted monthly by the Census Bureau to provide estimates of employment, unemployment, and other characteristics of the general labor force, the population as a whole and various subgroups in the population. The entire non-institutionalised population of the United States is sampled to obtain the respondents for this survey series. Besides the CPS core questions, the October 1981 Current Population Survey also gathered supplemental data on school enrollment for all persons three years old and over: whether attending public or private school, grade, if in school when over 14, and year of high school graduation of those from 14 to 34 or last year of school for non-graduates. College students indicated whether enrolled in a 2- or 4-year program, as well as the degree anticipated. Those working towards associates degrees specified if the program was occupational or general. College-age persons indicated whether they were taking any business, vocational, technical, or correspondence courses other than job training. The civilian non-institutionalized population of the United States was sampled and approximately 77,000 households were surveyed. The October 1981 Current Population Survey data are contained in a rectangular file.".
