- catalog abstract "The ICPSR staff has prepared over 150 datasets containing selected social, demographic, and educational data for France in the period from 1801-1897. The data were collected from published reports of three national statistical series as described below. National Censuses: Data from the quinquennial population censuses of France from 1801 to 1896 were obtained from the Statistique génerale de la France. Included are variables detailing the composition of the population by categories of age, sex, nativity, marital status, religion, place of residence, and occupation. The datasets also contain some limited information on migration, transportation and communication, housing, and families. A large segment of the census data pertains to occupations of the population, in addition to enumerations of the persons employed in various professions and trades, the datasets contain information on job classifications within professions as well as non-employed household members dependent upon employees in the various industries. The census data provide detailed social and economic information for the years from 1851 to 1896, the data for 1801-1851 are less rich in subject matter coverage but do present some basic characteristics of the population. Vital Statistics: Annual vital statistics for the French population are also available in this collection. These data were obtained from two printed series, Mouvement de la population (for the years from 1801-1868), and Statistique annuelle (covering 1869-1897). The basic variables included in the vital statistics datasets record births, deaths, and marriages in the nation. Detailed cross-tabulations of these demographic indicators are presented: births are tabulated by sex, month, legitimacy status, and characteristics of the parents, deaths are categorized by age and previous marital status of the partners. Additional variables obtained from the vital statistics reports include tabulations of divorces, passports issued, medical personnel and hospitals, and a literacy indicator (signing of marriage certificates). Primary Education: Information on primary schools was obtained from the series Statistique de l'enseignement primaire. The data obtained from the series basically cover the years from 1829 to 1897, although some recapitulative information for earlier years is also presented. The principal data in this series document primary schools, classes and buildings, enrollment, teachers, sources of funding and expenditure, and academic proficiency of the pupils. Additional information on literacy, teacher training (normal) schools, school age population, and libraries is also included. The majority of the data in this collection were recorded only at the departement level although some information can be supplied for various sub-departement units such as arrondissements, chef-lieux, and villes. A limited amount of information regarding boundary changes has been prepared by cooperating scholars at the Center de Recherches Historiques of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris. This information will be provided upon request. A machine-readable French language codebook, describing the data items as well as the sources from which they were obtained, is provided with each dataset supplied. In addition, lists of the variables included in each dataset have been prepared and will be supplied upon request. All datasets are available for use. The data were keypunched and verified, and a comprehensive series of manual and machine aided error-checking routines was carried out. Errors discovered by these procedures have been corrected and no further systematic error checks are contemplated, although errors uncovered through use of the data will be corrected as they are reported to ICPSR.".
