- catalog abstract "The study was conducted in 1957 in the cities of Osaka and Izumo, Japan. Data contain non-numeric codes. The respondents' opinions of Japan's national security strength are explored in variables which ask their opinion of the strength of and the need for security defense forces, Japan's rearmament, and the possible revision of the constitution to establish an army, navy, and air force. Japanese foreign policy is investigated, primarily in relations with the United States, Korea, and China. Questions about U.S.-Japanese relations focus on the presence of United States military bases and on the return of Okinawa to Japan. Recognition of Communist China is an area probed in the study as is the Japanese government's policy toward the Republic of Korea. The survey also investigates the respondents' personal political behavior and attitudes: voting, party support, and political efficacy.".
