- catalog abstract "The ICPSR holdings of 1970 Census data are separated into several collections: one for each of the Summary Count files, one large collection of the Public Use files, and one containing the Master Enumeration District List (MED) file. Within these collections, various data subsets may be requested depending on the user's needs. For example, if you wish first count data for Minnesota's Congressional Districts, you can order ICPSR #8122 Summary Count 1B for Minnesota. When ordering 1970 Census data, be sure to specify the file desired as well as the specific geographic region. In addition, ICPSR #0003 contains a subset of 1970 data that might be useful for users of the 1970 Census of Population and Housing. This subset, the National Coverage file, contains all the variables published in the Advance Report of the General Population Characteristics obtained from the First Count of the 1970 Census. The information in this file is presented for all countries and states in the United States. The data were prepared by the ICPSR staff. The Public Use Samples consist of 132 discrete data files. Each 1970 Public Use Sample is a representative sample of the records from the 1970 census sample questionnaires. The primary sample size is one-in-a-hundred or one sample unit (household, vacant unit, or person in group quarters) for every one hundred such units in the population. For each household, information is provided about the housing unit itself as well as the characteristics of each person therein. Two long form census questionnaires were used in the 1970 Census of Population and Housing: one for a 15% sample, the other for a 5% sample of the population. Of the 1970 samples, three 1/100 samples are drawn from the 15% sample data, and three from the 5% sample data, one for each of the three options for geographic information: (1)County Groups, (2) States, and (3) Geographic divisions with Neighborhood Characteristics. Any one sample contains only one of these types of information. For those users who do not require a file so large as one-in-a-hundred, a one-in-a-thousand sample has been prepared from each of the six one-in-a- hundred samples. Each of the 1/1,000 samples is a stratified systematic subsample of 1/10 of the records in the corresponding primary sample. For detailed study of population subgroups or of relatively small areas, public use samples of larger than 1/100 may be desirable. For the complete-count data and the 20% sample items (which include the general demographic and socioeconomic information and most of the housing data), a two-in-a-hundred sample can be obtained for any geographically identified area by tabulating the 15% and 5% data samples together. For study of characteristics of a nationwide population, the county group, state, and neighborhood characteristics samples could be tabulated together to yield a three-in-a-hundred sample of 100% and 20% data. Each Public Use Sample file consists of 120-character numeric records. On State and County Group samples there are two record types: (1) housing unit records and (2) person records. Each housing unit record is followed by a variable number of person records, i.e., one for each member of the household or none if a vacant unit. On the neighborhood characteristics samples a third type is also present: each neighborhood characteristic record is followed by the housing unit records sampled within the neighborhood, which in turn are associated with person records.".
