• catalog abstract "Data on respondents' political activities and attitudes were collected during the fall of 1956 and early spring of 1957 in Wayne County, Michigan from an adult cross-section sample selected by a random, stratified procedure utilizing the precinct as a primary sampling unit. The interviews focused especially on county, district, and precinct level organization and activity as well as on related perceptions, attitudes, and behavior of the adult public toward party structure at each level. Background variables established the respondent's age, sex, race, educational level, marital status, occupation, class, political affiliation, number of children, religious preference, and relationship to the head of the household. Demographic information was also collected on the respondent's father. A section gathered geographic information related to the respondent's living experience before coming to Detroit, and outlines the respondent's behavior regarding changing residences since coming to Detroit. Questions were asked of the respondent regarding use of the phone within the home. Items probing various influences on the respondent's political attitudes and behavior were included in the interview. These questions asked hich o the mass media the respondent depended on most heavily for political information, and how often politics was discussed in meetings of family, friends, neighbors, and other groups to which the respondent belongs. Questions were also asked about the importance and frequency of voting, the respondent's knowledge and involvement in local party politics, knowledge of precinct workers and the state party chairman, and general attitudes toward politics and political figures such as Stevenson and Eisenhower. Also studied were the respondent's opinions regarding several controversial issues including national health care, school integration, ending the selective service system, and monetary aid to countries which were not anti-communist. Though the subtitle of this study indicates otherwise, this collection does not deal with the political activities and attitudes of party leaders. That data can be obtained from the closely related collection: Detroit Area Study, 1957: Leader Survey (ICPSR 7107).".
