- catalog abstract "The main purpose of the study was to ascertain the respondents' attitudes toward the unification of Europe. Questions probed opinions concerning the economic, political, and administrative aspects of unification. Information concerning national pride and willingness to replace individual symbols of nationalism with United States of Europe symbols was gathered. Further questions explored the respondents' knowledge of and attitudes toward the Common Market. In addition, the study investigated the respondents' attitudes toward world society and politics. The emphasis was on the respondents' opinion of appropriate governmental priorities, both domestic and international. The degree of political participation of the respondents and their trust of foreign people was also ascertained, as well as demographic data. The study includes samples from six European countries. There are 10,542 respondents: 1,296 from Belgium, 1,975 from Britain, 2,046 from France, 2,014 from Germany, 1,806 from Italy, and 1,405 from The Netherlands. There are two cards of data per respondent except from the British sample which has 1 card per respondent. The samples consist of national cross-sections of the population of each country with all respondents aged 16 or older. The same questionnaire was used for all five continental countries. A shorter version of the same questionnaire was used in Britain.".
