- catalog abstract "The 1979 Chicano survey, conducted by the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, was a household survey of persons of Mexican descent in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, and Chicago. The purpose of the survey was to compile a statistically representative and comprehensive body of empirical information about the social, economic, and psychological status of Chicanos in the United States. Interviews were conducted in Spanish or English, depending upon the respondent's preference. A total of 991 interviews were collected.The interviews included both open- and closed-ended questions. The major topics included in the interviews were: 1) mental and physical health, and the use of health services; 2) family background, composition, customary practices, and values; 3) language use and attitudes; 4) employment history; and 5) social identity, group conciousness, and political opinions and participation. This data set is made available through the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Reasearch (ICPSR), and can be accessed by affiliates of Harvard and Radcliffe through the Murray Research Center and the Joint Harvard-MIT Data Center.".
