- catalog abstract "This dataset was prepared by Robert W. Fogel (the University of Chicago and the University of Rochester) and Stanley L. Engerman (the University of Rochester) and used for the analyses presented in Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery, Volume 1 and Time on the Cross: Evidence and Methods--A Supplement, Volume 2. Data on transactions involving the sale of approximately 5,000 Negro slaves, recorded in New Orleans from 1777-1862, are included in this dataset. The information presented for each transaction was obtained from the notarized bills of sale in the New Orleans Notarial Archival Office. Either 2-1/2 or 5% (depending on the year of the sale transaction) of the bills of sale in each year were drawn as a sample of all bills on file in the Notarial Archival Office. For each sale, information is recorded on the date of the sale, the number of slaves on the invoice, the geographical origin of the buyer and seller, the sale price, and characteristics of the slaves sold (age, sex, family relationship, and occupation).".
