- catalog abstract "The Consortium can supply basic county and state-level ecological or descriptive data for the years from 1790 to 1970. The majority of these ecological datasets were archived from the United States federal census reports of 1790-1970, although selected bodies of data from other sources have been integrated into the collection as well. The ecological data presently exist in the form of thirty-eight datasets. With one exception, all county-level data from each decennial census have been combined into one dataset per census. A list of the variables included in the collection has been compiled and sent to the Official Representative at Consortium member institutions. These lists reflect the datasets as presently constituted, and scholars at member institutions are asked to consult these lists when preparing their data requests. Individuals at non-member institutions may receive these lists on request. Although the data included in the collection are recorded for the most part as raw values, limited computation of percentages, ratios, and other derived statistics can be carried out by the archive staff at the user's request. The census data can also be merged with election data as specified by the individual requesting data. However, the user will be asked to defray a portion of these costs when the total cost of the request exceeds $100. An estimate of the cost of supplying particular bodies of ecological data will be provided upon request.".

- catalog description "The Consortium's collection of ecological data was archived according to the form of the data in the original sources. The user can expect no absolute uniformity in the number of counties present across the various ecological datasets. The spelling of county names has been standardized for all county-level records, and names which changed have been corrected to standardized form to allow matching of those counties across time. Information concerning county boundary changes has been collected and can be supplied upon request and at cost. In addition, a county identification number has been added to all county-level records and will serve to uniquely identify each county within a state. The majority of these data were keypunched and verified by the ICPSR staff, and limited but systematic error checks were conducted after keypunching. Although this proofing revealed only a negligible error rate, a comprehensive array of manual and machine-aided error-checking routines were also carried out, and errors discovered throuth them have been corrected.".
