- catalog abstract "This is a study of major crimes committed in 47 states of the United States (New Jersey, Alaska, and Hawaii were excluded). For each state the reported crime rates were determined for each of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's seven index crimes: murder, rape, assault, larceny, robbery, burglary, and auto theft. In addition, the probability of prison commitment and the average time served by those sentenced were determined and are reported for each of the index crimes. A number of socio-economic variables, along with per capita police expenditures for 1959 and 1960, are reported in the dataset. A second edition of this data exists: format conversion errors were corrected and the codebook now includes descriptive 24-character variable names and an appendix which lists the definitions for the crime classifications used in the collection.".
