- catalog abstract "1983 Radcliffe Artists in Residence Peter Sellars and Craig Smith conducted a series of three Learning From Performers sessions in Agassiz Theatre. Before the first "Art vs. Entertainment: Big Aesthetics," Buster Keaton's "Steamboat Bill, Jr." was screened as a focus for the discussion. Sellers contrasted the pure, direct approaches and materials used in Keaton's masterwork with superficial, million-dollar spectacles often produced today. Using a performance by two undergraduates of the "Letter Duet" from "The Marriage of Figaro" as an example, Sellars and Smith analyzed "What Makes Music Dramatic". They discussed the dynamics and decisions in the musical interpretation of texts. "Top Hat" and "South Pacific" were screened at Hilles Library Cinema before the third discussion, "The American Musical". In this discussion Smith played examples of some of the finest songs from musicals. And Sellars did a frame by frame "explication de tèxte" of "Top Hat", using a videotape.".
