- catalog abstract "With co-sponsorship from the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Harvard University Art Museums, The Office for the Arts hosted a panel discussion with Richard Avedon called "Perspectives on 'In the American West'". His show "In the American West" was exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art from February 20 through April 26. Participating with Avedon in the panel discussion in the Fogg Art Museum's Norton Lecture Hall were: Adam Gopnik, an editor at Alfred A. Knopf Inc.; Laura Wilson, a research assistant on this project; and Reudi Hoffman, master printer. To a crowd of 400, Avedon and his assistants talked about and illustrated with slides the whole process, motivations and working methods behind this highly controversial project which took seven years to complete. In his own talk he focused on "portraiture as Performance," showing how he uses photography as an artistic medium which can be manipulated to achieve the most powerful possible aesthetic compositions--to transcend the specific subject matter.".
