- catalog abstract "Mr. Marsalis conducted a discussion about jazz music with about 80 students in Kirkland House Junior Common Room. That evening, again at Kirkland House, he conducted an improvisation workshop and masterclass before an audience of over 300. In his talks he praised the "purity" of the entirely American art form, blues, and jazz music. While working with student musicians, individually and in each separate section, he discussed and demonstrated -- even taking a turn on the drums! Even though the development of jazz music is based on improvisation he advised that a musician has no right even to attempt to "innovate" until he has mastered some of the traditional jazz forms. In the trumpet master class he worked with 6 student trumpeters, generously turning his attention to each and making incisive comments on their musicianship, achieving remarkable transformations in their playing on the spot.".
