- catalog abstract "In a residency partly sponsored by CBS Records, saxophonist and composer Jane Ira Bloom and pianist Harry Connick, Jr., came to work in a series of workshops, classes and an Open Workshop Performance with the 19-member Harvard Jazz Band (director, Thomas Everett). On the first day of their visit each musician conducted a separate workshop -- Ms. Bloom an improvisation workshop in Agassiz Theatre; and Mr. Connick a jazz piano master class at Mather House with three students and ten observers. Ms. Bloom also met with the jazz band in an intensive workshop-rehearsal where they worked on her composition of "Flat Six Braxton Bop" which they performed the next evening in an open-to-the-public workshop (drawing an audience of 250). In her smaller session with six students Ms. Bloom demonstrated and talked about her highly innovative compositions on the soprano saxophone. Mr. Connick demonstrated several traditional jazz piano forms -- including stride, bebop, and honky tonk -- focusing on the importance of embracing the work of jazz greats before embarking on one's own individual style.".
