- catalog abstract "A major pioneer of American modern dance, Pearl Primus studied and introduced elements from African culture and history into modern dance in America. In a slide/talk in Agassiz Theatre, to an audience of 100 people, Ms. Primus talked about her life and career and her goal to "show the dignity, beauty, and strength of Black people" in her work. She explained how she became inspired to become a dancer while studying medicine at Hunter College, and talked about some of the teachers and mentors who led her to dancing and choreography, among them her "dearest mentor, like a big brother," Paul Robeson. She talked about why she strove always to be aware of and to express in her work "the political, social, and economic envelope of this country"--for example, in one of her earliest works, "Jim Crow Train", where she showed the special warmth and closeness communicated among the Jim Crow cars' passengers. She showed slides of her dances, and talked about her studies and teaching in Anthropology.".
