She was educated at the Chicago Normal School and the University of Chicago; in 1892 she married William Stephen Hefferan, a Chicago lawyer. They had three children: William S., Jr., Thomas E.M., and Helen M. Helen Hefferan was a professional training teacher at the Chicago Normal School for seven years. She was a life member of the National Congress of Mothers and president of a number of parents' and educational associations.
