- catalog abstract "Dercy and, after his death, Deschamps, who revised the work thoroughly, adapted the libretto freely from the Ossianic epic; they endeavoured to retain its sombre and fantastic colouring, but though the framework remained indisputably Ossianic, the plot, almost all of it newly invented, had very little to do with Le Tourneur's French translation. The basic theme is the rivalry between the Caledonians and the Scandinavians. The latter, led by their chieftain Duntalmo (bass), have invaded and conquered Caledonia (Scotland). The Caledonian bards and their chieftain Hydala (countertenor) are thus prisoners of the Scandinavian invaders on their own soil. The heroine Rosmala (soprano), daughter of the old bard Rozmor (bass) and betrothed to Ossian (tenor), is a prisoner of the Scandinavians and of Duntalmo, who intends to marry her against her will to his son Mornal (tenor). The main part of the plot thus centres on the conquest of Caledonia and Ossian's rescue of his imprisoned fiancée. The opera ends with the reconciliation of the two warring tribes, and there is a concluding chaconne, in the purest 18th-century tradition, in which the antagonistic themes of the Caledonians and Scandinavians are briefly superimposed.
