He was often involved in sectarian controversy, and published a number of religious treatises. Upon his death in 1716, much of Williams's estate was divided among charitable and educational institutions, including Harvard College. Williams stipulated that his bequest to Harvard should be used to “manage the blessed work of Converting the poor Indians there.”".
