- catalog abstract "As the world economy becomes increasingly interdependent, and Canada expands its role as an international commercial actor, the country's political and economic welfare will directly depend on its response to a wide range of economic regimes which govern the international economy. This book is an important and timely analysis of past and current Canadian policies towards both the formal and less formal regimes which regulate such areas as international trade and financial transactions, international service industries (shipping, air transport, and telecommunications), resources, and the environment. The authors show that Canada has exhibited a high degree of variation in its foreign policy responses which reflects the tensions among multilateral, bilateral, and unilateral policy responses, as well as between liberal and protectionist orientations. In addition, the authors point to the overwhelming influence that the United States continues to have on Canadian foreign economic policies. Written from a variety of perspectives, and including chapters by political scientists, economists, lawyers, and business and policy analysts, this book makes clearer the fascinating complexity of Canadian foreign economic policy.".
