Hersey served churches in Stafford, Connecticut; West Somerville, Massachusetts; Caribou, Maine; Muncie, Indiana; Canton, New York; and Danbury, Connecticut. During his pastorates, he was devoted to temperance issues and lectured on the subject at various schools, colleges, and churches. In 1947, he published History of Music at Tufts College, and received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from the college.".
