Chen graduated from Tsinghua College in 1920, earned abachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1922, and completed hisPhD in Economics at Harvard in 1926. Bertil Ohlin and Edward Chamberlin were among his contemporaries at Harvard. Chen returned to China in 1928. He served as professor of economics and chair of the economics department at Tsinghua University from 1928 to 1952. Harvard University alumni directories have him listed as Tsung D.
