- catalog abstract "The work of men like Harry Luman Russell established a vital and growing relationship between agriculture and the biological sciences during the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. Having studied in the laboratories of Koch and Pasteur, and taken his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University, Russell was outstandingly qualified as a bacteriologist. In 1893, as an assistant professor, he began his long career at the College of Agriculture of the University of Wisconsin. The direction of Russell's research was determined greatly by existing agricultural needs, but he was always mindful of the value of theoretical approaches to his work. Indeed, Russell was among the first and the most influential scientists to apply laboratory research systematically to solve problems of the farmer and dairyman.".
