- catalog abstract "Lives of Lawyers explains the popularity, ambiguities, confusions, deliberate misuse - and virtual meaninglessness - of the idea of professionalism functioning in today's legal profession. It then reconstructs the concept by examining how five different law firms and agencies create a particular ideal of professionalism through the organization and management of their practices. The book tells how each group reconciles business values with traditional ideas of what a lawyer should be and builds their practices around their concept of a professional ideal. Lives of Lawyers paints an intimate portrait of its subjects: two corporate firms, an in-house corporate counsel's office, a government law office, and a public interest agency. The author desribes the client/colleague relationships, explores how the practice connects to civic and community life, relates income levels and career satisfaction of attorneys, judges the social status of the organization, and identifies the character of the particular law practiced. These portrayals argue convincingly that there is not a single, unified legal profession. The stories illustrate the need for a pluralist vision of the profession - one quite at variance with the prevailing ethos of the organized Bar. The author's narrative approach vividly shows that no coherent account of professionalism, legal ethics, or the contemporary legal profession is possible without understanding the workings of practice organizations.".
