- catalog description "The history of Indian South Africans, how they came as indentured labour to the British Colony of Natal between the years 1860 and 1911, is vividly described. This book describes their emigration to Natal and thereafter their trials and tribulations which were invariably aggravated by harsh working conditions, laws which were seldom fairly executed, discrimination and unsympathetic Colonials who welcomed them as labourers, but not as settlers and competitors. Despite these obstacles, the early Indians proved to be worthy pioneers, the majority of whom chose not to return to poverty in their mother country. Instead, they accepted the Challenges of their new country and despite initial setbacks, such as poverty and being a disadvantaged society, they survived and by means of hard work, initiative and enterprise their descendants were destined to become a vibrant and pulsating force in the history of modern South Africa. 1. Passage to Natal 1860 : The Indentured System (1834-1917). ".
