- catalog description "Born in Ireland, Alfred Martin Duggan-Cronin (1874-1954) arrived in Kimberley, South Africa, in 1897 to work for De Beers Consolidated Mines as a security officer. He became interested in photography and started to keep a photographic record of the different tribes working in the diamond mines. In 1919, encouraged by Maria Wilman, curator of McGregor Museum, he undertook the first of many expeditions to the rural tribal areas of southern Africa to photograph the indigenous peoples and their traditional ways of life.".
