- catalog description "The Department of Social Responsibility, originally directed by Homer Jack, emanated from the Unitarian Fellowship for Social Justice in July 1965. Its predecessors in the American Unitarian Association were the Department of Social and Public Service (1908-1919), the Department of Social Relations (1927-1942), and the Department of Adult Education and Social Relations under the Division of Education (1944-1951). In 1971, the operation combined with the educational unit of the UUA and became known as the Department of Education and Social Concerns. In 1976, a structural shift moved the department to the Ministerial and Congregational Services operation of the UUA. In 1987, the department was moved to the newly created office of the Vice-President for Program and Planning. When this office was deactivated in 1994, the Department of Social Justice became one of eight major operational units of the UUA.".
