- catalog abstract "In recent years, scientists in many fields have contributed to a radically new understanding of the interrelationships between cognitive and emotional processes, on the one hand, and physiological ones, on the other. No longer do we regard psychological conflicts as "causing" particular physical problems, but we have not returned to the view that personality and emotional state are irrelevant to physical well-being. Drawing on exciting new work on such topics as stress and immune function, Robert Dantzer offers the first lively and accessible but scientific and up-to-date introduction to the interaction of mind and body in health and illness. Dantzer takes issue with the more popular theorizing about the relationship of emotions and personality to health, showing, for example, that popular beliefs in cancer-prone personalities or heart disease types are often misguided, simplistic, or sometimes just plain wrong. As Dantzer points out, such beliefs have had the unfortunate effect of making people feel culpable and guilty if they happen to fall prey to disease or illness. In addition, he questions popularly assumed relationships between emotions and psychological symptoms. It has often been assumed, for example, that depression causes sleeplessness. Dantzer postulates the reverse - that sleep disturbance can in fact be the source of depression, explaining why problems with sleep occur and how these problems can result in a sustained depression. The author presents a fascinating history of psychosomatic medicine in which he details some of the strange theories about the body once held to be true. Finally, he explains how far we've come in our understanding of the relationship between illness and our psyches and how much there is still to be learned. His is a fresh and challenging view on contemporary thinking about the mind and body.".
