- catalog abstract ""Alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg and Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselmann is one of the most significant representatives of American Pop Art, which achieved its international breakthrough during the early 1960s and has since attained a level of popularity virtually unrivaled by any other movement in the art of the post-war period. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1931, Wesselmann began working with collages during the early 1950s, incorporating found objects and elements borrowed from advertising. Since the early 1980s he has concentrated primarily upon his Metal Drawings and Paintings. Cut from aluminum or sheet-metal, mechanically or with the aid of a laser, these works transport the fleeting effect of underlying sketches and drawings in three-dimensional forms and luminous colors. This volume presents about one hundred of the most important works - many of them never before exhibited in public - representing all of Wesselmann's creative phases, thus enabling the reader to examine and appreciate the artist's work as a whole."--Jacket.".
