- catalog abstract ""This is a book about the effects that differing organizations of work in the automobile industry have on the workers that labor according to their dictates. Within the context of the crisis of Fordism, industry is scrambling to find new ways to organize production in order to compete successfully in post-Fordist markets. While the Japanese model of work organization, as exemplified by Toyota, seems to be the answer to the production questions posed by Fordism's demise, this work system has severe implications for Toyota workers, and for the workers laboring in factories modeled after this system. Through a comparative study of Toyota and Volvo, this book argues that there is more than one post-Fordist work organization, and that Volvo's answer to the crisis of Fordism - as exemplified by its Uddevalla plant - had far more positive implications for workers than does Toyota's."--Pref.".
