Married disasterously at the age of 17 to the son of a wealthy New York family, she obtained a divorce in 1903. A divorceé with a young son, she married Waldorf Astor in 1906 after meeting him on a trip to Europe. Settling at Clivenden House in Berkshire, she went on to become the mother of five further children between 1907 and 1918. Waldorf Astor was elected as conservative member for Plymouth in December, 1910. In 1919, Waldorf succeeded to the Viscountcy and Nancy decided to fight for his Plymouth seat ...
