- catalog abstract "The purpose of this book is to offer an appraisal of what collective action (CA) theories have and have not accomplished and an evaluation of where these theories should and should not head. The author argues that the core of the CA research program is a canonical Public Goods-Prisoner's Dilemma (PG-PD) game of CA that assumes pecuniary self-interest. Ideas from both game theory and microeconomic theory, two parts of the collective action field that have developed somewhat independently, are thus integrated. The book employs a four-fold typology of market, community, contract, and hierarchy to catalog over two dozen different sets of proposed solutions to the PG-PD game and investigates whether the proposed solutions actually produce cooperation.".
