This difference in pay was connected to job segregation and to women's 'double burden' of paid employment and household work. Yet, because of the lack of detailed data it was not possible to quantify the impact of different factors. The present study applies econometric methods which are standard in the West to survey data collected in the USSR, in 1989. It would previously have been out of the question for a Western economist to get access to primary microeconomic data from the Soviet period ... The models estimated in this study are treated as tools of descriptive statistics. With this approach concepts and evidence from Western research in economics, economic history and gender studies are integrated into the empirical study of the position of women in this specific social and economic system.
