- catalog description "Carol Riegelman Lubin (1909-2005) was born in Montclair, New Jersey to Lillian Ehrich and Charles A. Riegelman. Educated at local schoools, she received a B.A. from Smith College where she graduated with honors in 1930, and an M.A. in international relations from Columbia University in 1933. Lubin initially worked for James T. Shotwell, a Columbia professor of economics and the director of research and publications at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her responsibilities included extensive travel in Europe where she gathered research for Shotwell's two-volume history of the International Labour Organization. She also wrote several chapters for the publication. In 1935, Lubin was hired by the International Labour Organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Over the next 17 years, she held various administrative positions, including as assistant to John G. Winant, former governor of New Hampshire and U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. At the start of World War II, Lubin played a critical role in helping staff members to evacuate headquarters and establish temporary offices at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.".
