- catalog abstract "This book is not a book of fiction, although some parts of it may read like fiction. While in Africa the author kept a daybook in which he entered every evening a record of the events of the day. His daybook is the basis of this book. While too advanced in years to be considered for permanent work in Africa, Dr. Nau was asked to spend at least enough time there to lay the groundwork and begin organizing the Mission. For this purpose he was granted a leave of absence from his duties as president of Immanuel Lutheran College at Greensboro, NC. In April, 1936, accompanied by his good wife, Dr. Nau landed in Nigeria. When, after a year and a half, Dr. Nau had turned over the work to younger successors and was ready to return to the States, he could look back over those busy and, at times, very trying months with a great measure of satisfaction. He has written the story of those first eighteen months. As a result we now have the history of the beginning of our Lutheran Mission in Nigeria by the one most competent to record it. - Introduction.".
