- catalog abstract "Two studies compared partisan group members' construals and factual beliefs relevant to particular contentious issues. More importantly, both studies contrasted these actual differences in construal or beliefs with the assumptions about them made by partisans. Study 1 dealt with "Pro-choice" versus "Pro-life" beliefs relevant to the abortion debate. Study 2 dealt with Liberal versus Conservative construals in the racially charged Howard Beach incident. Although these studies provided many examples of nontrivial construal differences, overestimation of such differences proved to be far more common, and of greater magnitude, than underestimation. This finding suggests that the phenomenon in question is best characterized as a bias not in partisan perceptiions but in the way partisans, and partisanship, are perceived. The relevance of these results, both to our theoretical analysis of "naive realism" and to practical problems of understanding and resolving social conflict, are discussed.".
