- catalog abstract "Boundaries have been used as tools for managing resources and activities since the rise of collectivities of people organized for the purpose of economic stability. Different boundary perspectives are formalized through a taxonomy of legal, political, economic and social definitions. An understanding of the use of boundaries as a modern management tool is attempted by first examining the explicit and implicit use of boundaries in what is referred to as the "industrial era organization." The impact of information technology on boundaries is described in the context of the "industrial" as well as other organizational types. Finally, propositions as to how boundaries are being redefined as a result of economic and technological drives are put forward, and a call for further exploration of the subject in light of new organizational forms is suggested.".
