She attended Olivet College in Olivet, Mich., and Michigan Female College; during her college years she became interested in religious thought and was drawn to the Universalist belief that all persons will be saved. She taught school in Lansing and Lyons, Mich., and in May 1859 preached her first sermon in Portland, Mich., and became an itinerant preacher.
