• catalog abstract "Memorandum of an agreement between the abbot and convent of St. John's, Colchester, of the one part, and Ralph, son of the priest, and Symon le Eskermisur, then bailiffs of Colechester, Robert le Gros, Oliver, son of Elye, Richard de Langeho, Richard de la Barra, John, son of Elye, Robert, son of the priest, Thomas le Frarur, Saher Hameny, Saher Bacin, Walter Mansier, and the rest of the burgesses of Colchester of the other part; whereby Ralph and the others named, for themselves and the commune of Colchester, have granted to the abbot and convent and their successors that they may have free warren in their lands of West Dunilaund, on the left side of the way that leads from the steps next the house which belonged to Hamo de Campo, towards Koscelewod. They have also granted that the abbot and convent and their successors and their men shall be quit of toll and all other customs: only if their men exercise merchandise, they shall do what is just. They have granted also to the abbot and convent and their successors that they may have pillories and tumbrills in their lands of West Dunilaunde and Grenstede and may enclose as much as they will for the park toward [the road] which leads to "la Brich." In return for which, the abbot and convent have granted that the burgesses may hunt the hare, fox, and cat in the warren of West Dunilanda on the right-hand side of the way mentioned above, and in Grenestede saving to the abbot and convent their park in Grensted. It is added that if the dogs of the burgesses hunting the hare enter the warren of the abbot and catch the hare there, provided they draw off their dogs duly, they shall not be hindered, and it is agreed on both sides that if the men or dogs of either part do damage in the corn or any other damages, amendment shall be made to the injured party by view of 4 men to be chosen from both sides, and if the pary that did the damage refuse to make amends, he shall not hunt while he do.
