- catalog abstract "Past research on helping behavior has addressed what makes help-giving helpful. The present research focuses on the relatively unaddressed question of when help-giving is helpful. Individuals were either given help or no help on two rounds of a learning task by either an evaluative or a nonevaluative other. Results showed that more learning occurred when a nonevaluative other provided help consistently over time; the least learning occurred when an evaluative other provided help inconsistently over time. Recipient reactions of the performance experience provide additional evidence that the helpfulness of help is an interactive function of the timing of help-giving (specifically, the consistency versus inconsistency of help-giving) and the evaluative nature of the helping relationship.".
