- catalog abstract "In a nine site comparative study of airlines, crossfunctional coordination is shown to improve the quality, productivity and speed of the departure process. But how is coordination itself achieved? This paper's contribution is to identify a broad range of organizational practices that undermine or support crossfunctional coordination. Findings confirm the negative effects of some traditional practices -- functional accountability, selection based on functional excellence, inflexible work rules and the neglect of horizontal conflict resolution. The results also suggest that some currently popular management practices -- namely the automation of coordination through information technologies and the reduction of supervision in an effort to achieve leanness -- have the potential for undermining crossfunctional coordination. By grounding competing hypotheses from the organization design literature in a specific setting and testing them through statistical methods, this paper contributes to an evolving theory of coordination and to our understanding of interdependent work processes.".
