Ordained in 1950, his ministries included the First Unitarian Society Chicago; the Illinois Universalist Convention; the Mid-west Universalist Convention; the Huntsville (Illinois) Universalist Church; the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Terre Haute; the First Unitarian Church Jackson, Mississippi; and the Arlington Street Church in Boston. In 1965, Thompson was shot by an unknown assailant in Jackson, presumably a response to his civil rights work and to his integreted congregation in Jackson. After his recovery, he moved to Boston and continued his work in social justice/civil rights.".
