- catalog abstract "From the Preface: The purpose of this Resource Book is twofold. First, it expands the dialogue between those seeking to understand the causes and consequences of the forced displacement of people. It describes factors that compel people to leave their communities and countries of origin and is intended to stimulate further reflection on the underlying causes for human displacement today. It reviews the traumas and issues confronting the uprooted, the communities they leave behind and those in which they seek safe haven. Second, this book aims to challenge churches to prophetic and practical responses that promote human dignity and sustainable communities. It provides a theological reflection on human displacement and Christian responsibility. It identifies a number of 'Signs of Hope,' examples of concrete and effective actions from around the world which may serve as inspirations and ideas for local, national and international networking, advocacy and action. The final chapter is a reproduction of the Call to Action from the WCC Policy statement offered as a framework of shared global church actions. The content of the Resource Book may be used for bible studies, sermons, awareness building workshops, basic material for policy development and advocacy etc. This Resource Book does not presume to provide answers to all of the major dilemmas posed by forced displacement of people today. It is one contribution to a policy development process intended to set directions and compel commitments for worldwide church ministry with uprooted people. It will guide the elaboration of the Council's policy and practice and serve as a tool for the development of policies and actions at other levels of the Church. Where answers may not be evident, this document seeks to formulate questions and engage churches in a continuing process of reflection and action. This process, it is hoped will empower churches to formulate new visions towards a world based on values that honour human dignity and sustainability. --page 7.".
