- catalog abstract "This paper examines some determinants of the choice between focused and distributed organizational modes for information processing in research and development. It argues that as the information-processing challenges posedby complexity and uncertainty inherent in innovation mount, organizations gravitate towards either a focused or distributed organizational form. The paper provides evidence that the institutional context within which organizations operate exerts an important influence on their choice. These themes are explored through an analysis of modes of organization for manufacturing process development in the global semiconductor industry. Two propositions are tested statistically: 1. That Japanese semiconductor firms typically employed more distributed organizational modes for information processing in process development, while US organizations adopted more focused forms. 2. That as complexity and uncertainty in the information-processing task facing semiconductor development organizations increased between the early 1980s and mid 1990s, research and development organizations moved towards either more focused or more distributed organizational forms.".
