- catalog abstract "This paper combines the concepts of network centrality from social network theory and related knowledge from the diversification literature to argue that sharing of knowledge across subunits in a multiunit firm requires both the existence of related knowledge (the possibility of synergy) and central network positions (the realization aspect of synergy) to be effective. This argument is tested in a network study of 120 product development teams undertaken by 41 divisions in a large multiunit electronics company. Hazard rate analysis of project completion time provides evidence that the teams obtained knowledge more effectively through the interunit network to the extent that they had a central network position with respect to subunits that possessed related knowledge. I conclude with a discussion of implications for research on interunit knowledge sharing and synergy benefits in diversified firms.".
