Among her six children were Charles, Mary, and Willard; her husband took no responsibility for the family and in 1863 the couple separated. A vegetarian, Pierce taught school, contributed articles to a Wilmington newspaper, and raised her children with the help of her parents. Late in life she helped raise her grandson Hazlett, who she felt was ill-treated by his father. In 1894 Pierce moved to Chester County, Pa., to live with some relatives, the Hobson family. She died in 1899 in Smyrna, Del.".
