- catalog abstract "All researchers acknowledge that language is necessary for the full development of reading and that growth in reading benefits from language development. This book brings to teachers and parents the important research, theories, and effective practices on the nature of this relationship. It highlights how the relationship changes from preschool through the elementary grades and how the teacher can enhance the growth of each, and hence, the development of the other. In this short readable book, Biemiller provides valuable information on such topics as vocabulary development for reading and language, readability, standards that are most useful for language and reading development, and how to assess vocabulary difficulty in books. Curtis and Longo present a remedial program for adolescents who are behind in reading as much as five to six grade levels. With this program, students make impressive gains in reading of about two years for every year of instruction; thus, it is possible to bring most of them up to grade level. Based soundly in research and practice in reading and reading disabilities, the program simplicity allows it to be utilized by anyone and doesn't require elaborate training. In a field where conflicting views on best practices are all too common, it is comforting to know that there is almost complete agreement on the relation between language skills and reading skills. All researchers acknowledge that language is necessary for full development of reading and that growth in reading, in turn, benefits language development.".
