- catalog description "Abner Zaza Bowen (1859-1916) earned his Harvard AB 1885 and lived an unsettled life. He was born in Indiana and lived on his father's farm. He taught school at age 16, and worked his way east on freight trains to attend Harvard; he was 22 years old when he entered Harvard. Financial troubles might have ended his Harvard career but for the intervention of classmates. After graduation, he went to New York City and eventually he became a member of the Bar of New York. He originated the New York Evening Law School which became part of New York University, but left New York soon afterwards. He never settled into a single city or line of work, but travelled extensively on a variety business ventures, from Central America to the Northwest United States to "near the North Pole." He died in San Jose, California in 1916.".
