After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1940, she worked as assistant director of the Works Project Administration's recreation program in Oakland, and as regional supervisor for the Farm Security Administration in California, helping relocate farmers from dustbowl states. Pool served as supervisor of group work programs for the Young Women's Christian Association in New York City before moving to the University of Chicago, where she received her Ph.D. in 1955.".
